Does Ankylosing Spondylitis Affect the Foot?

Ankylosing spondylitis is an uncommon rheumatological disorder that primarily affects the spine with an inflammatory arthritis. It can affect any joint in the body, including the foot. Ankylosing spondylitis is similar to rheumatoid arthritis, but the inflammation is usually not as severe. Heel pain occurs in those with ankylosing spondylitis and the midfoot joints are also frequently impacted.

The approach to treating the foot pain that can come with ankylosing spondylitis is primarily directed at management of the inflammation of the joints with NSAIDs and TNF drugs. Local treatment of the midfoot and heel pain with adequate foot orthotics is also commonly used.
